The 26-year-old star, who recently got engaged to boyfriend Mike Fisher, will reportedly star alongside Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid in the movie based on the real-life story of teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm in a shark attack aged 13.

Underwood will be playing the role of a church youth leader called Sarah Hill.

Shooting is due to start later this month.

The 26-year-old country singer – who is normally tight-lipped about her love life – said of the hockey player: “He provided a lot of inspiration for songs, whether it was something he said or just by being supportive.

“When I was fried trying to write, he was my escape.”

It is rumoured that Underwood also thanked Fisher in the liner notes of her album, referring to him as “#12″ – the number on his hockey shirt.

The former American Idol winner said how glad she is to be getting married.

She said: “I didn’t want to be one of those people who has an amazing career, but ends up alone and unhappy.”

The singer also revealed that she is something of a homebody.

She said: “An Oklahoma girl like me wouldn’t even know how to be a diva.

“I’m just a person who has a cool job. I love to be at home. I rarely go to clubs… and I always wear underwear.

“I just know I’d fall down and that’s not for everyone to see.”

Instead the country singer just wants to show up and have a great time.

Underwood got engaged to hockey player Mike Fisher in December and while the couple have not revealed the date of the wedding, she admits they have all of the big decisions made.

It’s just the little details she doesn’t want to obsess over as she explained to People.com: “We have some of the big decisions made. I don’t care about details. I just want to show up and have a good time!”

Underwood will have to put her wedding planning on hold for a while though as she launches her US tour in March.

She added: “Right now I’m at the beginning of the race. I can’t see the end right now, but it’s really exciting. There’s a lot going on.”

Underwood, 26, and Ottawa Senators player Fisher, 29, walked their first red carpet together in the US last week, attending a Senators Foundation fundraiser.

Fisher then flew into Los Angeles after a game to attend Clive Davis’s famed pre-Grammy party on Saturday with Underwood and he accompanied his wife-to-be to the 2010 Grammy Awards as well.

Underwood, 26, is taking over from singer Jennifer Hudson, who performed at the same event last year in her first public appearance since her mother, brother and nephew were murdered.

Queen Latifah will also be giving a performance at this year’s game, which will see the Indianapolis Colts take on the New Orleans Saints, and will sing a rendition of America the Beautiful.

Previous stars to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl include Beyonce, Billy Joel and Whitney Houston.

The 26-year-old said she is progressing with her wedding plans and has been organising all the details.

She said to OK!: “I started tearing out pictures and stuff. I think I want a small wedding, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Underwood and Fisher got engaged just over a year after they started dating and pals say the romance shocked them both.

A friend said: “It came as a surprise to both of them. They knew they were attracted to each other, but then the relationship just happened overnight – faster than either expected.”
