Cate Blanchett signs on for Hanna

Read More ]"/> Cate Blanchett has signed on for a role in the movie Hanna, to be directed by Joe Wright.

The movie is sure to spark controversy with its plot about a teen, Saoirse Ronan, who is raised to be a killer by her father.

Blanchett, meanwhile, turned up in Sydney last night with her playwright husband, Andrew Upton, for the opening night of Spring Awakening at the Sydney Theatre Company.

The actress, 40, and Upton are co-directors of the company. Blanchett struck an intellectual pose in a pair of heavily rimmed black spectacles in photos that surfaced.

Spring Awakening is about teenagers awakening to their sexuality in the 19th century. The production received eight Tony Awards in 2007. Blanchett said: “This work really requires people who have got enough perspective and distance on their adolescence, and enough maturity to be able to interpret it.”

Blanchett and Upton have found teen actors for the play. She noted: “Usually when Spring Awakening is performed it’s done by people in their late 20s. But we’ve deliberately sought – and found – younger people who are able to do it. It’s really quite raw and confronting.”
