Prince William receives warm welcome Down Under

Read More ]"/> Prince William looked as though he had a slight touch of sunburn when he was treated to a rock star welcome in Sydney, Australia.

Balding Wills, 27, on an unofficial visit Down Under, appeared flushed by the summer sun as he visited an Aboriginal community centre in the city.

The Prince, second in line to the UK throne, was greeted by more than 1,000 cheering Aussies in the run-down Redfern district.

By then, he had already spent nearly four hours outside in clear blue skies and 25 degree C heat after flying into Sydney from New Zealand.

After he walked off the plane, Wills was driven through the city to Admiralty House in Kirribilli, the official residence of the Governor General of Australia.

There he had an outdoor lunch during which he met dignitaries and celebrities including singer Delta Goodrem and Michael Clarke, the vice-captain of the Australian cricket team.

Later in the afternoon, he was welcomed at the community centre with a traditional smoking ceremony – the burning of eucalyptus leaves – carried out by Aboriginal elders.

During a one-hour visit he read sections of the popular children’s book Possum Magic to youngsters.

When he emerged from the centre the young Prince treated the waiting crowds to a Princess Diana-style walkabout, shaking hands and having his photo taken with fans.

The Prince’s three-day visit to Australia is his first time down under since he was brought to the country by his parents Charles and Diana in 1983 aged just nine months.
