The 25-year-old royal, who was just 12 when his mother Princess Diana was killed in a car crash, presented the group of eight mums with the honour at UK newspaper The Sun’s Millies awards.

He said to the ladies: “Your story is truly humbling. To show such immense courage in the face of tragedy is beyond words.”

Each of the eight men were killed in Afghanistan within 24 hours of each other during July.

Talking about his own time in Afghanistan last year, he added: “As far as what you are doing with this courage – sending parcels to every single serviceman and woman in Afghanistan – I can tell you first hand what a difference it makes.

“It’s not just what’s inside that counts – it’s also the knowledge people are thinking of you back home.”
