The British actor, currently playing Hamlet on Broadway, said: “I am delighted and honoured to do what I can to keep Heath’s legacy alive. He was a brilliant actor and a wonderful man and it is only fitting that this scholarship has been developed in his name.”

The announcement that Law would join judges for the 2010 Heath Ledger Scholarship was made at a benefit screening of The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Ledger died in New York City in January 2008.

Last year, the scholarship was awarded by the LA group, Australians in Film, to Oliver Ackland, 30. The award was marked by a star-studded party at the Chateau Marmont.

Other judges on the panel include: casting agent John Papsidera, who cast Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight; Gregor Jordan, who directed Ledger in Ned Kelly and Two Hands; casting agent Ann Fay; and Susie Dobson, chair of Australians in Film.

The scholarship awards $10,000 and a Qantas return airfare from Australia to Los Angeles. It is supported by Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, the Ledger family, Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann and Rachel Griffiths.
