Mirren has been nominated for best female lead, while Firth has been honoured with a best male actor nomination.

The prestigious awards traditionally recognise work in independent film and are set for March 5, 2010.

Mirren, who won an Oscar for The Queen, appears in a film that has scooped five Spirit nominations – The Last Station. The movie is a study of the final year of the life of Leo Tolstoy.

Sony Pictures picked up The Last Station, which is to open in theatres this Friday. Sony Pictures Classics Co-President Tom Bernard said: “This movie is intellectual but it’s entertaining. It deals with more than costumes and queens.”

The Spirit Awards have previously taken place in Santa Monica on a Saturday afternoon before the Academy Awards. But this year, they will move to a Friday night slot in downtown Los Angeles.
