Globe nominee Colin Firth marvels at depth of Tom Ford’s character in A Single Man

Firth plays a gay man in the 1960s whose life unravels when his longtime companion dies.

“I was intrigued by it. It gradually dawned on me that I was going to be taking everybody through the entire narrative and just about every human experience you can imagine within a rather contained man.”

He noted the sheer range of emotion the role demanded. Firth added: “He wakes up and we find him in a state of utter despair, but through the course of those 15 hours or so (that the film covers) he experiences lust, rage, frivolity, serenity, regret.

“It wasn’t all written, but I did know it was quite an adventure to embark on with someone who has the burning imagination that Tom Ford has. He has an extraordinary capacity to communicate that.”

Firth said he was surprised by the choice Ford, a fashion designer and photographer, made. “To choose a story about a lonely, suicidal college professor in 1962 didn’t feel like a chance to show off his spring collection, you know? So I thought this has got to be more personal than that. It wasn’t until after about a week into the shoot that I just realised how much there was to explore and [Ford's] not an interfering director.

“He sets up a very controlled environment with stimuli that are incredibly potent and strong, whether it is the set or the clothes or the mood that he establishes, and then he lets you get on with it.”
