Bruno star Sacha Baron Cohen sued for £70million in libel damages

A Palestinian grocer and peace activist, Ayman Abu Aita, from Bethlehem, says that his depiction in the movie has ruined his life.

In the flick, Cohen’s gay Austrian character claims he travels to the Ein El-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon to meet the leader of the Al-Aqsa Brigades.

A caption then calls the man: “Terrorist group leader, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.”

However, the scene was actually filmed at a hotel on the outskirts of Bethlehem in an area under Israeli control next to an Israeli army base.

Cohen then appeared on US TV last July and said to the chatshow host Letterman that his production team had found a ‘real terrorist’ through a CIA contract.

Abu Aita has now filed a lawsuit against Cohen as well as NBC Universal Studios and Letterman and is asking for £70million, which is equal to half of the movie’s gross box-office takings.

He claims that since the movie, he has received death threats, is a firm opponent to terrorists and was tricked into meeting Cohen as he was led to believe he was a German man making a film about the Palestinian cause.
