Anika Noni Rose plays Princess Tiana in The Princess and the Frog, which made $25 million in its opening weekend.

Noni Rose tells Essence, a US magazine aimed at black women: “I feel fantastic. I’ve always wanted to do a Disney voice. I didn’t realise what a big deal it was going to be.”

The Princess and the Frog is a modern-day version of the fairytale about a princess who kisses a prince who is trapped in the body of a frog.

But in this movie – set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans -Tiana kisses the prince and becomes a frog too.

Noni Rose, 37, is no stranger to hit movies after appearing alongside Beyoncé Knowles and Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson in the musical Dreamgirls.

She said of her Princess Tiana role: “I am so honoured and so proud and so excited about what this means beyond me, down the line. This character is being offered up as something to love, not something ‘different’.”
