John, 62, was hospitalised after being stricken with the illness and was forced to cancel several UK and US dates.

He spoke out about his recovery at the Aids Foundation benefit in New York.

He said: “The worst thing about being in the hospital was that it’s the first time I’ve been in bed for about nine days in the whole of my life.”

He added: “The worst thing was having to cancel shows, I hate that. But I’m back on my feet and I’m bouncing around now.”
