The 30-year-old star said that this was the real reason that he cancelled his recent solo tour of Northern Ireland and Eire and not ‘exhaustion’ as it was claimed.

Doherty has been fitted with implants to stop him feeling the effects of drugs such as heroin and cocaine following his drug addiction.

He claims that the night he spent at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon last month was not the result of taking drugs.

He said to UK magazine NME: “If I hadn’t been on a life support machine, I’d have been in Ireland. But my heart stopped. It was a really strange turn of events.

“Obviously, the doctors’ immediate thought was that it was to do with drugs but it wasn’t – it was some kind of poisoning. What happened? Well, I don’t remember.

“At the time I thought I was a taxi driver offering to take everyone to Elephant And Castle. I was running into the walls, making steering wheel signs with my hands. And then I just… stopped. My body just stopped.”
