Madonna has wrapped up her Malawi visit, flying out of the southern African country that is stricken with HIV/AIDS.

Madonna took her four children, two of whom are adopted from Malawi, to the country to open a girls school she has funded. The family spent almost a week in Malawi where Madonna, 51, broke ground for the opening of the $15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.

The singer took her son David Banda to the orphanage from which she adopted him. Staff there commended her for the care she has taken of the boy.

Her charity, Raising Malawi, provides support and medical care to children who have lost parents to AIDS. There are about 500,000 such orphans in Malawi.

Also travelling with Madonna were her other children Mercy James, who also comes from Malawi, Rocco and Lourdes.
