Goldens Girls star Rue McClanahan has undergone surgery in New York.

The actress went to hospital for a routine physical exam, as she had been experiencing shortness of breath, but her doctor found that she had a heart problem that required bypass surgery.

A rep for the star told Entertainment Tonight: "She's doing great and the doctors say the surgery was a complete success. She's expected to be released within the next couple of weeks, and remains in the hospital under observation.

"Rue hasn't lost her sense of humour and is in good spirits, and has even been accepting new work offers starting as soon as January."

McClanahan said she was "devastated" to have to cancel an appearance at a special event in her honour next week in San Francisco.
