The 69-year-old previously upset fellow Liverpudlians when he said he missed ‘nothing’ about his birthplace, but he has now written an autobiographical account of his childhood on new album Y Not.

He said: “People believe I was born, was a Beatle and lived in a big house. And where I come from was a very dark, damp, violent neighbourhood.”

The singer revealed that he will be making more comments about his birthplace with every new album that he releases.

He said: “I wanted to write another little snapshot of my life and I’m going to do this every album. It’s better for me than doing it in a book. In two lines I can say what would take five pages.”
