The Candle in the Wind star made the crack to a US gossip columnist as they compared the size of their jewellery at his annual AIDS Foundation fundraising bash in New York.

Reporter Cindy Adams said: “He was wearing a diamond and emerald brooch. Me, too.

“He said, ‘Yours is bigger… and that’s always been my problem. Some other guy’s is always bigger.’

“Then he said, ‘And you can quote me’.”

Sir Elton, 62, also revealed that he hated the food at the posh hospital he was treated in when he came down with flu and E.coli earlier this month.

He said: “I was so glad to see him [husband David Furnish] and so glad to get out of that hospital. Let’s not even talk about their food.”

He told the New York Post: “I suddenly came down with this infection, and within 48 hours was in the hospital for nine days.”

The Elton John Aids Foundation aims to fund innovative HIV prevention programmes and to eliminate the stigma and discrimination associated with the illness.
