Little Britain star David Walliams has said that he was “thrilled” when celebrated Roald Dahl illustrator Quentin Blake agreed to do the drawings for his new book.

The comedian’s new book, Mr Stink, is the second time he has collaborated on a book for children with Blake, 77, for which the former Children’s Laureate did the cover, as well as the inside drawings.

Walliams, 38, said: “My publishers asked me who I’d like to illustrate the first book, and I immediately said: ‘Oh, Quentin Blake, but we’ll never get him. He’ll definitely say no’. I was so thrilled when he didn’t.

“It feels doubly special to be working with someone whose work you loved so much as a kid – like getting Tom Baker to do the voiceovers on Little Britain. I love being a fan.”

He added: “I don’t feel any embarrassment about that at all. I’ve even got Quentin to sign a copy of the book!”
