David Beckham puffs at half-time as LA Galaxy succumbs

The sighting was a reported first, even though the waning soccer star is a known asthmatic since childhood.

A spokesman for Beckham said: “David’s always had a mild form of asthma. It’s not severe but he does use an inhaler on occasions.”

LA Galaxy lost the cup final 5-4 on penalties to Real Salt Lake. Beckham was watched by his wife, Victoria, and son, Romeo.

But some viewed the sighting as evidence that asthma should not stop a child aiming high. Mike Thomas, of Asthma UK, said: “Seeing David Beckham using an inhaler is proof asthma needn’t stop you competing at the highest level.”
