Carrie Underwood is closing the emotional gap in her life, opening up to people around her.

The country music singer, 26, told a Tennessee newspaper she is becoming more able to let people see who she really is – and learning to be funny into the bargain.

"I'm getting better with that, but when you open that book and let people in, there's something scary about that. I guess I'm used to keeping people at a distance," said Underwood, who is a former winner on American Idol.

The talented singer, who garnered an astonishing 10 number one hits from her first two albums said: "I'm my own worst critic, and I don't need any more negativity in my life. So I go to my website and see good reviews and things that make me feel good," she said.

Underwood, who won the fourth season of Idol, is set to co-host the Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday.
