Craig and Jackman, both 41, offered to sell off the vests they wore for a performance of their play A Steady Rain.

The vests were sold to two women for US$3,500 (£2,100) each and the money raised will go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, which provides services for people with Aids and other illnesses across the US.

Only one of the vests was going to be auctioned off, but a female audience member shouted out: “How much for the pants?”

Jackman then said: “By pants, we are talking about the trousers, right?

The audience then laughed at his comments and he considered giving away the trousers, but he then agreed to sell two of the vests instead of one.

The two actors also auctioned off a backstage meeting with audience members and to pose for pictures if they could raise US$2,000 (£1,200).
