Late film director Anthony Minghella has left his son nothing in his will.

Minghella died suddenly at the age of 54. Probate records show he left a gross estate of £7,531,190 that was reduced to a net amount of £6,581,238 after outstanding affairs were settled.

Minghella's eldest daughter Hannah, 30, a daughter from the director's first marriage, receives a bequest of £20,000 and a quarter of his work's royalties.

But Minghella's 24-year-old son, Max, the son of second wife Carolyn Choa, has been left nothing. Sources close to Max and his late father say: "There was absolutely no rift between them – they were extremely close."

A close friend of Max said: "My only explanation is that Anthony's will was of a man who did not expect to die. He was still comparatively young, and his death was sudden and a shock. My guess is that he would have reckoned Carolyn would take care of Max and he didn't need to make special provision.

"For his daughter, who is older with a family of her own, he probably felt he had to do something special because she was raised in a different family and – of course – he wanted her to feel she was still important to him."
