Rod Stewart has said meeting soul legend Wilson Pickett was better than performing for the Queen.

The chart star said he was speechless when he was introduced to the Mustang Sally singer at a music business bash.

He said: "I've met and sung for the royal family, but when I met Wilson Pickett at Clive Davis' Grammy ball, that was the greatest experience of my life."

Rod's new album of classic soul covers, Soulbook, is in stores now.

But it doesn't feature any Pickett songs – because he felt they were too "sacred".

And he joked that he had been forced to make some concessions to his advancing years.

The 64-year-old told Rolling Stone magazine: "We have a few uptempo songs.

"But not too much.

"I don't want to upset my arthritis."

He added: "These songs shaped me. I can't wait to go out and sing them."

Pickett died in 2006 at the age of 64.
