US rapper Akon dove into a crowd of fans when violence erupted at a concert he was giving in the Australian city of Melbourne.Police were called to the scene and 18 people, including two security guards, were injured. But Akon claimed he jumped to stop brawls that broke out due to rival gangs both inside and outside the Melbourne Park venue. A group of up to 50 people rushed the entrance at about 9pm in a bid to gain entry to the concert.Akon promoter Dwayne Cross said the rapper risked his own safety to calm the crowd. "One of the things people should take note of is an artist didn’t have too much concern for his own safety to go down and try and make things better," he said.Cross said Akon cared about the crowd. He said: "The thing that I saw, and I was standing right next to him. He walked to a girl [involved in a fight] and walked to her and held her face and said, 'You’re better than that.'"Footage released on YouTube showed Akon walking through the crowd telling fans to calm down. Cross, who noted crowd interaction was part of Akon's show, said: "As a promoter it was a little bit upsetting, because he wanted to go into the crowd."Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said: "They were all men aged between 22 and 54. They were all suffering cuts and bruising, some of them had to be given some pain relief. They were all taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition."One man has been arrested in connection with the violence, it was reported.Akon is due to play Sydney tonight.source: Splash News
